Since the military and security forces of most nations do not have chaplaincies, or have chaplaincies with only one faith group, it is obvious that in most places Evangelicals have no way of getting chaplaincy training in their own country. The result is that many begin to do the work of a chaplain without adequate training. It is bad enough when you are not officially recognized as a chaplain, but much worse when you are officially appointed as a chaplain. One chaplain told us that when he became a chaplain, he was the only one in the armed forces of his nation. When he asked about training to do the job, he was told simply “Be at the right place at the right time.”
To meet this need the IAEC offers chaplaincy training courses. These are usually two weeks in length. They provide training on what chaplaincy duties are and how to do them. They are not simply lectures, but rather interactive classes with much student participation and discussion. They are not seminary courses or theology classes. They are based on what a chaplain would learn in a formal chaplain training course in any nation having a Chaplain School except for things peculiar to that nation such as how to wear the uniform, customs and traditions of the forces of that nation, etc. Students must learn those things and get their theological training on their own.
At this time the IAEC does not offer chaplain training by correspondence.
